The guys ‘n gals at Google presented another nifty gadget today, the Google Deskbar, beta version 0.5. This (for the moment Windows-only) taskbar extension allows you to search Google, without the need of opening a browser.

After installing the Google Deskbar, a new toolbar will be added to the Windows taskbar, which will look similar to this:

Google Deskbar

Typing a keyword in the input field will popup a window (in MSN Messenger style). Clicking one of the search results will either open a new browser window, or, depending on your preferences, browse to the site in the popup window. Clicking anywhere outside the popup will auto-hide it.

Another very cool thing is the hotkey feature (default is Ctrl-Alt-G), which will focus your keyboard input on the search fiedl of the Deskbar. Pressing the hotkey will also automatically fill the search field with the content of the clipboard, so just pressing [enter] will make Google find whatever is on your clipboard.

Get the Google Deskbar here and let the search frenzy commence!

The tool requires Windows 98 / ME / 2000 or XP and Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.
