I recently discovered a nice gadget for Microsoft Windows users that envy the Mac OS X Dock feature. It is called MobyDock and gives you about the same functionality as Apple users get with Jaguar: a slick looking, smooth moving taskbar like thingy that allows you to launch programs, place shotcuts and browse your folders with.

After downloading and installing MobyDock, an item that looks similar to the thing you see below will appear, which will replace the regular Windows taskbar.

Hovering the mouse over the items has a magnifying effect, as shown here:

This is what the creators of MobyDock have to say:

This version stands apart from our previous releases since it’s the first that features all the basic funcionality that you can expect from a 1.0 version. We have improved almost all main parts of MobyDock and added some new features while reducing the memory usage.

It’s now possible to navigate through folders and subfolders via context-menu, position the dock anywhere on the screen and to specify the working directory for applications. In addition, we have added drag & drop support for system files/folders. (e.g. my computer, my music folders). The passwords of the mail-checker are now automatically saved and an autofocus-function was added for an improved user experience.

You may encounter some small bugs, as MobyDock is still in beta, but it is nonetheless a very interesting and fun tool to play with.
