The new Photoshop logo
Monday 24 September 2007 – Filed under: Art & Design – 26 Comments
Last week, Armin of underconsideration.com wrote about the new Adobe Photoshop logo as introduced by Adobe’s John Nack. After looking at it, I honestly thought it was a joke. See for yourself:

What is it? A speech bubble? With a hole in it? Some people even suggested it closely resembles E.T.
Unfortunately, it is already being used on adobe.com, so it is not at all under consideration, it is official.
And it isn’t just the logo, the tagline is horrible as well. “See what’s possible”… Why would you need a tagline at all? Photoshop is way beyond that…

I think it’s some kind of “P”…
I miss the macromedia logos, they were excellent, why didn’t they continue that style

Perhaps you are right, Juan, it might actually be some kind of ‘P’. Still, don’t like it.

Come on; it’s a camera. Clearly
It’s a camera, and they use it because you make Photos with a camera … and ehm you can use Photoshop to… ehm And it resembles a speech bubble because you can add text to your photos with Photoshop… I think. Yes? No?

It looks like something someone makes when they first discover plugins and cool effects they can now do. If my graphic designer came back with a logo like that I would tell him where he could stick it

It’s only the logo of the new Photoshop Family. That’s why it looks like a P, it IS a “P”!

Hello Martijn,
I am using a component developed by you (not sure but it has your name) called Follow Component, v2.2. I am trying to use it with Flash 8 but does not work. Any suggestions? Please help.
Thanks,
-Hugo

It looks like a gelatinous bubble of retarded.

It looks like a side view of a toilet roll holder !
a Logo should easily associate a symbol to a company with the public I doubt if most people even at an Adobe conference would associate it with anything Adobe ……. it would be interesting to hear their feedback comments !!

Possibly based on the new tagline “see what’s possible”, the thing is supposed to be a stylized “eye”. In any case, I still don’t like it much, and agree with all the comments listed (with the exception of Hugo Broche). Hugo: do you just not care whatsoever about where you post your “please help me now!!” tech-support questions? Come on, get a clue, dude – notice all the answers you received here?

I see…
1) a blue heart with a missing piece (lower-right) and a hole in the up-right
2) a stylized rotated lowercase letter A, 90 degrees to left and in the same time the letter P. Yes.. AP, 2 in 1, Adobe Photoshop
3) a logo that I can’t understand

I don’t understand the pointy thing. You can’t mix round and pointy. That’s like crossing the beams. It’s just not done.

It looks like a birds-eye view of a toilet bowl or a bedpan. The “see what’s possible” tagline evokes all manner of ill thoughts in that context.

It looks like a sperm trapped in a Viagra capsule.

I think all of the above comments are right on. It looks like a modded “eye”, it resembles a P, as in Photoshop, it looks like a speech bubble. Also, I’m not really sure why, but the hole in it makes me want to have sex with it. I have a feeling that weird shape would make the greatest sounds of erotic pleasure as long as that glassy finish had no sharp edges and was lubed up pretty good.
Aside from that, the smooth, glassy effect seems trendy and I have a feeling it’s going to appear dated rather quickly.
It seems like some bastard design child from Adobe, Quicktime and Saniflush.
“See what’s possible?” It doesn’t seem like a daring design to interface with the slogan, does it? But WTF do I know about commercial logo design?

is made of fail and fugly

Man, is that ugly.
Without the whole, it’s a speech bubble. I’d assume it for was a chat app. If it’s supposed to be an amalgamation of the ‘P’ and the ‘S’ then the slant should be on the other side, methinks. Either way, I still can’t believe this got past senior designers, marketing and PR.

*hole

Reminds me of the PBS logo. Obviously a P though.

looks like a Boomer Hanger (BJ hole)

Some song escapes my mind for a name it went “whatever colours you have in your mind, I’ll show them to you…”. It does look a bit like a component from a toilet-roll holder, (designed by Steve Jobs). As a “P” or a “Ps” it is a “¿que?”, unfortunately. It is an attempt to represent the old adage “a picture is worth a thousand (or n) words”, (or Aldous Huxley’s last words “… picture this…” he’d taken LSD). It also has a function as part of the Adobe Creative Suite concept. It is a “jigsaw” piece in the family of products which form the Suite. Expect to see this “jigsaw” exploding in HD3D on a screen in your neighbourhood soon… with birds of many coloured feather hunting butterflies of similar hue appearing through the holes. The accompanying text on the other hand is the mange of a different dog. The simple “Ps” has gone in favour of the “A DEVICE plus PRODUCTNAME plus SOME OTHER CAPTION“. When I look in Power Options of the operating system I see “UPS”. I know what it is about but not what it is an acronym for. To me it is the United Parcel Service. UPS have used their acronym device effectively for about sixty years. Other companies have done the same for even longer, BMW and P&O for example.
This image I don’t like at all as it needs extensive ancilliary support to associate it with its purpose hence the addition of more text.

very ugly logo, if someone create this logo for me, I would have fired him. Something Stupidity
Saturday 7 March 2009 at 02:08
It is rather weird. I guess I’ve gotten used to the frequently changing things these days, so I don’t mind it too much. I think it will look better in a group of programs with similar styled logos (I am sort of refering to Creative Suite).
“Whoever invented should be dragged out into the street and shot.”
-What Garfield said about Christmas trees.
I guess it works here too.

A classic example of bad marketing (even worse then an ugly logo.) but well they can do what they want and still get away with it.
