FLV Player 2.0.25 released
Tuesday 21 October 2008 – Filed under: FLV Player – 100 Comments
I just released FLV Player 2.0, build 25. Please find the download link on the FLV Player page.

FLV Player main window and metadata sheet
In this version I have added a ‘video-only mode’. Just press [tab] to hide all FLV Player interface elements. This allows you to view video without disturbing UI components. While in video-only mode, you can still drag the video around and use the [ctrl-.], [ctrl-1], [ctrl-2] and [ctrl-enter] shortcuts to resize the video (to respectively 50%, 100%, 200% and fullscreen).
Another addition is the ability to control the sound volume using the [arrow-up] (to increase volume) and [arrow-down] (to decrease volume) keys. Besides that I added the possibility to click on the timer to toggle between seconds and milliseconds display.
On a final note, I restored the [arrow-right] shortcut to jump 5 seconds forward that was inadvertently disabled in build 24.

Do you have a silent uninstall switch for FLV PLayer?
Tuesday 21 October 2008 at 13:26
Hi Tim, I created the installer for FLV Player with NSIS. At the moment, silent INstall works, but silent UNinstall doesn’t. If you wish to upgrade, you can just run the new installer with /S appended to it as a parameter. FLV Player will then be installed using the default settings.

hi, what happened to the “always on top” option?? I couldn’t find. it’s a pity…
Wednesday 22 October 2008 at 02:52
Hi migawka, Yes, the always on top option… I had to remove that because of a bug in mProjector, the tool I create FLV Player with (related to the fact that the ‘about window’ isn’t displayed anymore either, bit of a technical story, won’t bore you with this).
Anyway, I’m looking for a work-around and will hopefully be able to re-introduce that feature in an upcoming release. Until then, please bear with me. Thanks for your patience!
Thursday 23 October 2008 at 23:33
Martijn, love the FLV player!
However on some of the .flv files that I play, the toggle bar isn’t available on the status bar (thus allowing me to use my pointer to advance the video). I can’t click on the playing bar to advance the video, but I can use the right arrow key to get it to advance.
Any ideas?
Friday 24 October 2008 at 11:49
Awesome work mate! I would just love to see a Always on top option.
Keep up the good work!
Saturday 25 October 2008 at 14:09
Hi, Perfect player, but I miss a playlist.
Sunday 26 October 2008 at 04:42
Steve, I’m not sure that I understand what you are saying. What do you mean by toggle bar? Regards, Martijn.
Monday 27 October 2008 at 20:00
The little vertical bar that is supposed to be in the play/status bar.
The part that you can point and drag to advance the movie.
My terminology is probably not correct, but it is located right above the “info” button”.
Tuesday 28 October 2008 at 04:30
I wish a playlist
Tuesday 28 October 2008 at 19:45
Hi Martijn,
Thanks for the cool program. I do have a request, I am running dual monitors at home and at work. I run the FLV player on the 2nd monitor, and each time I resize the program window, video auto-repeats, etc. the program pops over to the 2nd monitor. Any chance that can get fixed in a future release.

sorry for the second comment.
unfortunately, your page script ommited the error message in brakes. here’s the error again, without brakes:
address ‘CreateURLMonikerEx’ not found in ‘urlmon.dll

Wednesday 29 October 2008 at 08:11
Hi Alf – that is probably because of an old version of Internet Explorer. FLV Player requires Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. (internally, FLV Player uses mProjector, see here for additional info).
Wednesday 29 October 2008 at 23:09
Ooops… I meant the program pops over to the 1st monitor.
Thursday 30 October 2008 at 03:55
awesome program man, just needs the Always On Top fixed and it would be perfect
cheers for addin the video only option
Saturday 1 November 2008 at 20:38
Love the player, can you please add drag or file:addto playlist function in next build? My kids get so impatient with me loading the next video each time by hand.
The fullscreen bug got me a couple times (not often) but I’m afraid I couldn’t give you enough info on that to be helpful.
By the way I got FLV Player 2.0.24 from Applian with mediacatcher. They aren’t distributing build 25 yet.
Great App!
Tuesday 4 November 2008 at 14:04
hmm.. can you make a flv player for windows mobile. i don’t think there is an effective flv player for windows mobile currently. just giving suggestion because i’m currently needing it badly!!! please.
Wednesday 5 November 2008 at 09:22
Re: No escape from full screen mode:
Running the program in Win2k compatibility mode looks a bit odd, since the problem also exists under Win2k itself. Workaround that did it for me under both XP and W2K: deselect “Maintain framerate in fullscreen mode”.
Oh, and btw, your “[If you wish, you can] email me” doesn’t work.
Wednesday 5 November 2008 at 11:24
I would like to see alpha channel support for FLV. In either window-ed or video-only mode, the background could be semi-transparent or fully transparent with/without a border. This would really help me to test an FLV received from a client without having to create/compile a SWF.
Thursday 6 November 2008 at 14:58
Hi Martin,
really great Idea about FLV-Player! so handy
it’s like a year or tow now I’m using version 1.3.3, and just today I thought search for next versions if exist!
btw something always bother me about! I always think is a great idea if it was on FLV Player! I mean a “next frame” and “pre frame” button or even beter if it has shortcuts! something like quicktime or even flash-player ( ctrl + > / < )!
is there any chance to get them on next version so?!
Btw tnx and apreciate for all your great efforts,
cheers,
mim
Thursday 6 November 2008 at 15:05
Every time I start the FLV player I find in my temp directory another directory like “mProjector1640541402″ with flash files (version 9). In my Windows directoray I have the flash files with version 10. Where do the files come from?
Thursday 6 November 2008 at 15:25
Just downloaded it and wonna say something!
1.the new loop feature is great! makes my life really easier!
2. there is a kinda of bug if you can call it this way about dual monitors! ie I have 2×20″ monitors, then when I put the player on my 2nd monitor, when it just finishing the track and wonna being it from start (in loop mode) it jumps to my first monitor again!! not a bad thibg really it is but I think it would be help if you just know it!
3. Tnx alot!

in the next release of FLV player, is it possible to add a feature that allows us to play a list of videos?
Thursday 6 November 2008 at 20:00
Great player. Really needs a playlist feature however.
Sunday 9 November 2008 at 15:41
@Piet: thanks for letting me know, email link has been fixed.
Sunday 9 November 2008 at 15:42
@Juergen: that isn’t supposed to happen. Please let me know if this was a temporary problem, or if it still persists. Thanks!
Tuesday 11 November 2008 at 11:36
Where is i can buy this program here? I am from Russia and bad know English.
Tuesday 11 November 2008 at 13:59
@Egor – this program is free, you can download it here http://www.martijndevisser.com/blog/flv-player/ as it says on the top of the article.
best regards, Martijn.
Wednesday 12 November 2008 at 14:08
Hi Martjin,
Thanks for the great program, I’ve been using it for a while now much to my liking. I updated to the latest release and I really like the video only option. I just wanted to report a tiny bug that you may not be aware of. If you are in video-only mode and go fullscreen by double-clicking, when you escape from fullscreen the Title and shadow of the menu become visible over the video.
Just a heads up,
Thanks for the player!

This is the only program I miss having made the switch to Mac earlier this year. Nothing on the Mac is comparable, especially for its simplicity and its detailed info view.
Tuesday 18 November 2008 at 11:30
FYI, I also found your program rebranded at applian.com. Don’t know if with/without your permission. Couldn’t find anything about it here and they don’t give any credit to you. Figured it is yours since they are a version behind. Very cool program. I use it often and recommend it highly.
Tuesday 18 November 2008 at 20:36
Great program, but I have a question. Is there anyway to adjust the brightness of the rendered video. When I play the FLV video in Windows Media Player Classic or VLC is is nice and bright, but in FLV Player it is very dark and washed out. PLV Player is the only one of the three that lets me position the video playback location.
Thanks Much,
Steve
Tuesday 18 November 2008 at 22:41
Thanks for a great program! I use it all the time.
One thing I miss compared to the 1.x version is the ’stay-on-top’ option – it seems to have disappeared! Are there any plans on re-adding it?
Thanks again,
Jason
Sunday 23 November 2008 at 15:49
Thanks for this really nice app for playing my youtube downloads!
The stay-on-top thing would be nice again… missing it right after updating to build 25!
Tuesday 25 November 2008 at 15:59

Installed v2.0.25 – not happy that you can’t toggle out of full screen mode – even when using w2k compatibility. Have now reverted to v1.3.3 until this major bug is fixed.
Monday 1 December 2008 at 11:40
It’s crashes when starting:
Shows this message

and aftrer that crashes.
(I’ve use WIN2000 SP3)
Older version 1.3.3 worked fine.

There’s an unfortunate bug in FLVplayer using dual monitor: it always uses the primary monitor in going fullscreen, even if the player is on the secondary.
Unfortunately, since you’re using the high level Adobe code base (via mprojector), you’re also stuck with the (*incredible*) amount of annoying bugs the morons at Adobe left in it. For instance, dual monitor operation is completely broken and has been for some time on their damn player. With the last update of Flash, Adobe left a bug where if you tried to go full screen on a secondary monitor (where your browser window is), it would still force you to have the fullscreen window on the main.
QA anyone!? (Flame not directed at you btw, but at morons like Edwin Wong who are supposed to be in charge of their (phantom) QA)
Your player inherited that obviously.
Now the last Flash update seems to fix that, but introduced a new bug, where, when you go full screen on one monitor, if you start working on another (ie changing focus from the flash player spawned by your browser window to the desktop), it will immediately exit fullscreen
Wednesday 3 December 2008 at 12:00
@User – please see item 4 in the FAQ
Wednesday 3 December 2008 at 12:02
@Jock – I understand your frustration, I am also very unhappy with the way ScreenTime mProjector folks are handling this issue (their complete lack thereof that is…).
It would take quite some time to completely convert FLV Player to another SWF2EXE program at the moment though.
Sunday 14 December 2008 at 14:01
flv player 2.0.25 does not completely honor multiple screens. That is, changes of the player size (fullscreen, x2, or dragging of the size box) cause it to jump to the main screen. Otherwise the second screen works well, including adjusting the size while on screen 1 and dragging the window to screen 2.
Thursday 18 December 2008 at 01:12
Hi,
Thanks for a great player, without doubt the best around. I also miss the “always ontop” feature. Hope you can re-introduce this again at some stage. Thanks again for your excellent program.
Kind Regards

It appears FLVPlayer 2.0 build 25 contains the vulnerable Flash ActiveX control ver. 9.0.124.0 for which exploits are available on the Internet. Can you confirm FLVPlayer is not vulnerable. Secunia PSI states program “… is insecure and potentially exposes your system to security threats!”
Thursday 25 December 2008 at 15:43
However on some of the .flv files that I play, the toggle bar isn’t available on the status bar (thus allowing me to use my pointer to advance the video). I can’t click on the playing bar to advance the video, but I can use the right arrow key to get it to advance.
Tuesday 30 December 2008 at 21:18
Hi jmatt – flvplayer indeed contains flash player 9.0.124. However, the player is only used to play flv files with, it is not used to browse any sites with. I will however update the next version of flv player with the latest version of flash player.

how can i translate this program to kazakh language? is it possible?
Sunday 4 January 2009 at 20:14

Is there a chance to save stream (RTMP) in the future?

Thank’s a lot!
Your soft is simple, lite, efficient, clean interface, all that an user can wish.

Thursday 8 January 2009 at 14:51
Running in portable mode, is it possible to open FLVplayer and auto play a certain file using command prompt ? if so what is the correct argument structure.
cheers btw, very handy little flash player
Thursday 8 January 2009 at 15:25
oops… never mind, i got it… cant have any spaces in the file path folder names, damit thats a pain !
Friday 9 January 2009 at 09:37
@Gunslinger: you can have spaces in the path, just make sure you wrap the path in quotes in it contains spaces though and you should be fine.
Sunday 11 January 2009 at 17:45
can your player slow down or speed up the video and sound at the same time? microsoft’s windows media player allows for that for *.wmv format at least and it would be ‘cool’ to have that for *.flv format, as well…
Tuesday 13 January 2009 at 07:05
I like the player very well. However i cannot figure out how to get more than one video to play at a time. I tried dragging and dropping the files into the play window but all it does is play the last video i dragged. How should I be doing this to make it work correctly?
Friday 16 January 2009 at 20:33
While attempting to play a recorded .FLV file that is 90MB, the player just keep reading “loading media “file.FLV” Is the file too large? Is something else not setup right?
Saturday 24 January 2009 at 03:19
How come your product is being detected as containing a backdoor virus?
BitDefender is picking it up as having Backdoor.Generic.147030
Tuesday 27 January 2009 at 22:47
Really like your player, but I am having problems with the loop feature. I activate the loop button, but it does not always replay the file as a continuous loop. Any suggestions?
Wednesday 28 January 2009 at 21:36
it won’t let me uninstall. invalid uninstall file. it seems there are other people who have this problem….
call me cynical, but when a program refuses to uninstall when i tell it to, i get suspicious. i remember how long it took me to get rid of symantec stuff, i hope this is different!
Thursday 29 January 2009 at 08:02
Would be nice if we could specify that a video should open in the 50% mode. I am watching some videos that have a size larger than my screen allows. Going to 50% works fine; however, since the player is using almost 100% of my CPU, it takes a bit of work (and lots of key presses) to get the short cut keys to register.
Or maybe a mode where the video doesn’t start playing immediately.
Friday 30 January 2009 at 09:29
Hi “wanttouninstall” – FLV Player (un)installer was made with NSIS, a highly popular installer system. I have tested the uninstaller on various configurations and never had any problems with it whatsoever. Is the “invalid uninstall file” the only mesage you get? Did you try uninstalling through the add/remove control panel?
Friday 30 January 2009 at 09:32
@NJ – regarding virus warnings: this is a false positive. Not sure what causes it. perhaps the inclusion of the Adobe Flash Player inside FLV Player, or the inclusion of the optional Yahoo toolbar? FLV Player is scanned by Download.com before it is accepted, please make sure you only download it from that URL (see the flvplayer page on my blog).
Wednesday 11 February 2009 at 19:44
Hi Martjin, first off thanks for making this awesome player!
I have some bugs to report:
- The video pauses for a fraction of a second whenever I minimise or maximise items on my taskbar in Windows XP, this was present in previous versions of FLV player as well.
- When I play .flv files that are audio-only, the whole interface bar disappears. When I press “Tab”, the video screen opens but the interface itself (with all the buttons etc) is missing.
Hope you can fix these issues, thanks again!
Friday 13 February 2009 at 05:39
Just a FYI that the latest update for BitDefender Antivirus no longer detects any issues so it looks like they have corrected their product to no longer pick up the false +.
Friday 13 February 2009 at 21:13
Have enjoyed using FLVPlayer in the past but when wanting to install on new Laptop where I have recent and latest version of Spyware terminator installed. Spyware Terminator indicates that the download/exe from cnet carries a “back door generic 142937 STB” and automatically blocks both saving the download and/or running the download (Which I already had downloaded on another PC)
To date I have not installed FLVPlayer
as nobody seems to have yet confirmed that issue is a false positive in Spyware Terminators database.
Friday 20 February 2009 at 14:47
Using Applian FLV Player 2.0, I drag and drop my video into the Window provived, the video ran normally, but Applian FLV Player does not allow me to save video after running has been completed. I understand that I can use Nero or Roxio to Burn the video.
Sunday 22 February 2009 at 13:31
OMG the “Always on top” option!?
NOOOOOO way…… plzzzzzzzzzzzzz fix it ASAP!
BEAUTIFUL program btw
Monday 23 February 2009 at 23:00
I’m finding that the default way in which your player breaks up the rtmp URL into connect/play strings doesn’t work for me. Is there a way to specify connect and play strings separately, rather than relying on your default break-up ?
Sunday 1 March 2009 at 12:51
@eli: no, not yet. it is a feature on my todo list though.
Wednesday 18 March 2009 at 21:34
Great work!! I’m looking forward for it to have a playlist so we can add files in order and play them for hours. Keep up the great work!! tnx.
Sunday 22 March 2009 at 07:19
1. Can I play my flv video files in quede sequence like in a playlist? How can this be done?
2. what other media programs aside from flv can play my flv yideo files?
Thanks.
Tuesday 24 March 2009 at 04:32
Hi Martijin,
It’s cool the new version program, but i miss the right option, so very useful:
-Standar window behavior.
-Always on top of other windows
-Always below other windows
…
Grà cies,a reveure.
Sunday 29 March 2009 at 20:07
Hi Martin -
Excellent program, but is there any way that one can adjust the brightness and contrast (as in BS Player?). Quite often one needs to increase the brightness/contrast due to dark scenes or entirely dark clip.
Thursday 2 April 2009 at 08:19
Hi Martin,
First, I’d like to thank you for the effort to develop this great application.
Here is the bug I found in latest v2.0.25 in dual screen windows vista system.
Put the flv player in the second screen. Drag a flv file onto it, the player will jump back the first screen automatically.
Open a flv file with flv player, put it on the second screen, click the full screen button or double click the display window, the player will enter full screen mode on the first screen instead of the second.
Saturday 4 April 2009 at 01:45
I noticed a weird issue related to the frame rate with some HD FLV’s.
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/44895.html?type=flv
The HD version of this when played in FLV Player seems to have a “jittery” frame rate (especially in Fullscreen mode), but when you constantly keep making the mouse move around, the frame rate speeds up to the correct rate. Not sure why this is happening but you might want to look in to this (I’d like to watch FLV’s “without” having to keep moving my mouse around every time).
Thursday 9 April 2009 at 23:34
I just wanted to say THANKS for this cool player, I think it is the best FLV player around, great that you added a loop function, it was the only feature which I missed in the old V 1.3.3 which I am still using. Keep up this good work!
Sunday 12 April 2009 at 14:48
This player just skips soundless video parts (fast forward until there is sound). Bad! It looks like he’s only following the audio track(s) and when he reaches the end he simply goes to the next audio section and skips what is between.
There is no way to prevent him from doing it.
Can this be fixd?
Thursday 23 April 2009 at 03:04
Martin,
I’m having a problem playing a streaming video using RTMP. Whenever the stream’s connection gets bad, the video freezes, and I can’t refresh the connection by pausing and resuming, so I have to close the player and reopen it to get it to work. Could you add a stop option or a way for the player to reacquire the stream automatically?
Thursday 23 April 2009 at 03:07
Actually, sometimes it does fix it, and sometimes it just freezes, so I’m not sure what’s going on.
Thursday 23 April 2009 at 21:30
@Mark: do you have a link to the FLV file in particular? Would love to see if I can fix this problem. Thanks! Martijn.

I am unable to remove FLV player 1.3.3 from my pc (xp home). I had installed FLV player 2 but the 1.3.3 version always came up on selecting a flv file. The only way to play a file in the newer version is open it and drag and drop the file into it.
I have done a complete search of my pc but unable to fine FLV player 1.3.3 , I have uninstalled FLV player 2 but it still shows up as FLV player 1.3.3.
Would appreciate your help and expertise on this.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,
i noticed a very high CPU usage (97-100%) when playing hi-res flv-files (640×480px). Smaller files (320×240px) work great (just about 30% CPU usage).
Is there anything I can do about it or is my computer just too old? I have a Pentium 4, 2 GHz with 512 MB RAM.

How Do You Brighten the picture???
Tuesday 7 July 2009 at 12:12
I have a problem. Ive used FLV player before but on windows 7 nothing will play. What can I do to make it so videos show up? All it says is “loading file (file name)” and thats it,
Saturday 25 July 2009 at 23:38
I carefully looked at the previous 80 or so comments here before posting this question. It was asked before but not answered. I use your player almost exclusively for playing back .flv files on the desktop. I would like to have the same capability for my Windows Mobile phone. Are all of the technologies available for you to create a Windows Mobile version? I want to strongly encourage you to create such an application (with the same clean user interface) even if you decide to sell it, rather than provide it for free. Is a Windows Mobile version from you a realistic, near future possibility? Thanks for a wonderful application.
Tuesday 29 September 2009 at 16:14
Hi it’s almost a year since the last release of FLV player 2.0 b25.
Your software works great, but there are some times when the seek bar refuses to appear when the video clip is played. Reopening the video clip(double click icon, or browse to video file from inside player) sometimes work and the seek bar appears, but it’s a hit-and-miss thing and I am unable to faithfully reproduce this bug or pinpoint the cause. Using Vista SP2, everything patched and latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed.
If you are planning to make a newer version, please look into the above issue.
And yes, it is good to develop for mobile devices(WinMo, Palm, iPhone, Android etc). Those portable gadgets will become more powerful and functional, that it becomes ubiquitous. PCs will go the way of the floppy disk or pager, and only used for specific niche purposes eg. servers.
Monday 26 October 2009 at 05:50
hi . i download the flv software. but i can’t watch anymovie’s on it. i work with window xp.
is there any thing that i can do to watch???
thanks mike
Tuesday 27 October 2009 at 00:58
Thanks for this handy program. Please add PAL (alternative to NTSC) playback capability for MPEG-4 videos. Also, it would be nice if the program could also play MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files, since these are still common on the internet for video clips. Nevertheless, for FLV and MP4, your program is quite excellent. Thanks much.
Thursday 3 December 2009 at 18:53
When we click on the scroll-bar to jump to a certain part of the video… it jumps WAY past that point.
Can this bug be fixed?
Thursday 3 December 2009 at 19:00
How do we tell which version of FLV Player we have?
PLEASE show the version number in the INFO page.
Friday 4 December 2009 at 14:51
@Jill – the version number can be found at the bottom of the application window when flv player starts. The latest versiona t the moment is 2.0.25.
Sunday 6 December 2009 at 00:29
I have a problem. before I used FLV player before on xp but on windows 7 nothing will play. What can I do to make it so videos show up? The error is “loading file”
What Should I do?
Thursday 17 December 2009 at 04:26
Hi. Is it possible to restore the ability to skip backward with [arrow-left] key?
Monday 28 December 2009 at 19:17
Excellent program, i would like to know if in new release you could include and option to convert to an MP3 so i can listen the music in other equipment other than the PC.
Thursday 7 January 2010 at 07:34
Thanks for this great program:
Here are 2 suggestions:
add 2 command lines options switch:
- Start player in fullscreen (/full)
- Close player after video is finished playing (/quit)
Is there anyway the video can use hardware video overlay with an option?
Thanks
Thursday 7 January 2010 at 07:50
Is there any keyboard shortcuts for:
-muting the video?
-changing video option to smooth the screen?
-changing video option to keep full video rate in fullscreen?
-different shortcuts for play and pause video?
Thanks

Greetings Mr. Martijn:
I want to go back to a question that Andreas had…
What is the CPU requirements for usage of your FLV Player? I have two older computers that run Windows XP Pro, and my task manager shows that my CPU usage totally maxes out when I play any .flv files in this player. I am only running a 1GHz processor with 768 MB of RAM. If your FLV player requires more RAM and processor than that, I wish that you could or would design a version that was not so CPU and RAM intensive. Or, do you have older, less intensive versions of your FLV Player available for older systems? I can’t seem to find them on your website.
It sort of makes me sick nowadays with what direction that MicroSlop is taking Windows in; that is, with more and more system requirements, thereby literally forcing computer users to throw away their older systems just to keep up with the Jone’s (and Gate’s) at MicroSloth.
So much for all the statements & ideals of “Green culture/Green societies/etc”…
I think that it is insane that new software practices and manufacturers are requiring the rest of us human beings in the world to throw away our machines the moment that they are over 15 minutes old, “Andy-Warhol-Standard-Time”.
I have a great [old] computer that would continue to work well for another 50 years or so, IF those mindless twits at MicroSilly were mindful that it is insane to design new OS’s that require the power of the a thermonuclear device to run them! What the hell are those folks thinking at MicroSleep anyway?
However, on a “more pleasant note”, Martijn, I have been using your FANTASTIC FLV Player for some time now, and I really LOVE IT! Overall, I think your product is GREAT! (I just wish that it did not use so much RAM and CPU power.)
Thanx!

Jose

I am developer and I am writing an Windows .NET application to play FLV files by launching your application. I am basically building a program that can build a playlist and then launch your player. However, I cannot “kill” your process after the video is done. Can you add a command line argument that I could pass to you program that would cause your player to close after the video is done playing. Maybe “/autoclose ?
