New bike

And now for something completely different: I picked up my new bicycle at the Bikeshop (careful, their website is… well… different) yesterday! I have always bought inexpensive secondhand (or 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th…) bikes. Sort of a habit since college, mostly because bikes get stolen in Holland extremely often. It is normal – for me at least – to own a bike for about one or two years until it gets jacked, usually when leaving it for a night at the train station.

But times have changed, and it is about time I entered the world of new bikes. I wanted a sturdy model with the possibility to mount a child seat in the front to drive The Little One around. After doing some research and testdrives, I bought a beautiful black Sparta Pick Up:

Funny thing is that I expected to make my purchase online, but in the end I didn’t. Actually test driving a bike is impossible on a website. Truly experiencing it is still an offline thing. How heavy is the frame, how smooth are the gears, is the color really a good as my laptop screen said? I’m sure I could have gotten a better deal online, but the guys at the shop were friendly, gave a lot of good advice and they’ll be doing any maintenance and repairs with a discount. They outperformed the lower price that I could have paid online by offering great service and craftsmanship.

Anyway, it is a terrific bike! And yes, I have reserved a place for it at the guarded bicycle parking at the station…

    Hi Martijn

Terrific bike…. Thanks very much for letting me use the FLV Player.

I am experimenting with a folding bike in Vancouver BC Canada for commuting.
The Big wheels is so much nicer for Amsterdam … heck pretty much anywhere.
Using transit trains and buses makes this little modified Asama put to task.
Hope to finish the adaptions for BC conditions then try to build a few more.
Was going to send a gif but noticed nowhere to drop it.

Like the way you folks make things 3D and interactive…

    Anyway all the Best

Hi, I’m new here. Interesting bike; bicycling is good for the body, wonderful for the spirit and a must for the environment. I wish the US had a well thought out system for commuting by bike as the rest of the world. Your web-link showing the “Bike Park†was very cool, the US is so behind. I grow up in the Motor City, Detroit and would you believe the in many affluent areas there is not even sidewalks as it is expected that all have auto’s (even the children are driven to school each day). I’ve been cycling since I was six and the fun has never stopped. Off-road, Mtn-biking is very cool.

Just wanted to thank you for the Flash Player.

Friends, can you maybe asssit me? A buddy of mine is considering getting themselves a new cbr 1000 as their first bike! They have never rode anything else before! I said this is definitely not a very good idea for the first one, but they are adamant and wont change their mind! What do you rekon, is this ok and would you then just recommend proper training lessons?
